Prosodic issues in synthesising thadou, a tibeto-burman tone language

چکیده
The objective of the present analysis is to present linguistic constraints on the phonetic realisation of lexical tone which are relevant for the choice of a speech synthesis development strategy for a specific type of tone language. The selected case is Thadou (Tibeto-Burman), which has lexical and morphosyntactic tone as well as phonetic tone displacement. The last two constraint types differ from those in more wellknown tone languages such as Mandarin, and present problems for mainstream corpus-based speech synthesis techniques. Linguistic and phonetic models and a ‘microvoice’ for rule-based tone generation are developed.

Another objective of this paper is to unravel the underlying tonal nature of various prefixes and suffixes that participate in these processes. Boro is a tone language belonging to the Tibeto-Burman group. The language lexically distinguishes L and H tones. The TBU in Boro is the syllable and...

متن کاملTonal Contrasts and Initial Consonants: A Case Study of Tamang, a 'Missing Link' in Tonogenesis
Tamang (Bodic division of Tibeto-Burman) is spoken at the edge of the East Asian 'tone-prone' zone, next to the almost tone-free Indian linguistic area, and is, chronologically, at the late end of the tone multiplication wave which has swept through East Asia in the course of the last two millennia. It can be regarded as a 'missing link' in tonogenesis: following the loss of voicing contrasts o...

The tonemes of the Waromung Mongsen dialect of Ao Naga, a Tibeto-Burman of northeast India, are described with respect to their auditory and acoustic features. Even though rather small FO differences are found to separate each contrasting toneme, the results of a perception test nevertheless demonstrate that these small differences are perceptually salient to a native speaker and are readily id...
متن کاملThe Use of Perception Tests in Studying the Tonal System of Prinmi Dialects: A Speaker-centered Approach to Descriptive Linguistics
Contrary to previous description based on the Mandarin model of syllable-tone system, Xinyingpan, a dialect of Prinmi (a Tibeto-Burman language of China), has been discovered to possess a melody-tone system (or “pitch-accent” system) akin to that of Japanese. Targeting the crux of the unusual characteristics of this melody-tone system, where neutralization of two tonal categories in citation fo...
